XVI edition of Canary Islands International Film Market ends with great success. An edition marked by the growing interest aroused, as proved this year by +80 entries of audiovisual projects & literary works, the highest figures since the CIIF Market is held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Twenty national and international film and television projects in search of financing, international distribution and coproduction were selected. Also, authors or editors of six Canary literary works introduced their works to the audiovisual industry experts.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife was from October 8 to 12 the key meeting point for filmmakers, creators, screenwriters, producers, distributors, sales agents, television channels, etc., as well as, for local authors, editors, TV channels, radio and media outlets. 

Heavy Meetings Schedule at CIIF Market 2019

Around 500 one-on-one meetings and pitching sessions were held by investors, sales agents, TV channels and producers looking for new models of financing, coproduction partners or international distribution. 

More than 20 decision makers as Bendita Film Sales, Canary Islands Film, Canary Islands Audiovisual Cluster, Danidog Films, Filmarket Hub, El Viaje Films, Filmax, Frida Films, Imval Productions, Latido Films, Macaronesia Films, Music Library & SFX, Scenic Rights, Tarkemoto, Tenerife Film Commission, Canary Islands Public Television (RTVC), Volcano Films and Zeta Studios attended the market.

Atresmedia Cine and Movistar for Latin America have also requested the dossiers of selected audiovisual projects.

Parallel Activities

CIIF Market 2019 organized interesting training and professional activities as workshops or masterclasses focused on the audiovisual sector. Participants, institutions, organizations, film and audiovisual students of the islands, local writers and cultural associations packed the venue at almost full capacity.

On the other hand, PROEXCA and Canarias Cultura en Red / Canary Islands Film made a presentation on tax incentives in the Canary Islands, production and institutional support. The presentation focused on explaining the initiatives carried out by the Canary Islands Government in audiovisual matters such as production subsidies, training plans, promotion of the Canary industry, grants for the attendance to film markets, professional advice, among others.

CIIF Market 2019 Awards for international promotion: 

CIIF Market Award for the project with the greatest international projection, with a cash amount of 1,200 euro that must be used to attend an international market of the producer’s choice.

Canarias Cultura en Red Award for the best Canary project, which will award the winner with a travel grant to attend a sectorial and/or international audiovisual market.

Filmarket Hub Award, consisting of one year free registration in this renown platform, which will facilitate access to the most important audiovisual production companies and financing funds in search of projects.

Macaronesia Films Award for the project with the most international potential, which will receive financial and legal advisory services (project finance) regarding tax incentives in the Canary Islands. It also includes the development of the corporate structure, drafting of contracts, allocation of incentives, assistance in the search for fiscal financing and assistance in the preparation of the financing plan.

Music Library & SFX Award, the winning project will have a flat rate limited to a free production, which will allow synchronization of the music from the Music Library & SFX catalogs for the project content.

“Pobre Diablo”, directed by Guillermo Polo. Scriptwriter: David Pascual and Guillermo Polo. Produced by Los Hermanos Polo and Japónica Films. Black Comedy about the weird relationship between two brothers and an odd roadtrip to find their identity. 

Macaronesia Films Award

“Época de silencio”, directed by Fernando González Gómez, scriptwriter: Vasileios Papatheocaris. Produced by José Luis Rancaño (La Dalia Films). A TV series project, a futuristic thriller about an IT medical program that allows to prolong life.

Filmarket Hub Award

“La Indiana”, scriptwriter: Jorge Hernández Pérez. TV series project set in La Palma Islands on the verge of the XIX century that tells the story of two brothers have just inherited the family tobacco company. 

Canary Islands Film Award

“Holocausto Vampiro (Apocalipsis Voodoo 2)”  directed by Vasni J. Ramos, scriptwriters: José J. Ramallo, Sergio G. Ramos and Vasni J. Ramos. Produced by El Hombre Invisible Films. Action & fantastic comedy in which brave detectives must save the planet from a supernatural threat. 

CIIF Market Santa Cruz De Tenerife 2019 Award

The three shortlisted projects were:

“El Predicador”, director and scriptwriter: Facundo Escudero Salinas and produced by Nicolás Münzel, Pensilvania Films. (Argentina). Suspense drama about a hustler that turns into a religious leader. 

“Las Mil Vidas”, director and scriptwriter: Marina Seresesky, produced by Álvaro Lavín, Meridional Producciones. (Spain). Thriller that tells the story of a mother that decides to travel to Latin America searching for her son missing years ago and convinced that she will find answers. A journey in which she will discover the painful truth of what really happened.

“Pobre Diablo”, directed by Guillermo Polo (Los Hermanos Polo and Japónica Films. (Spain).

THE CIIF MARKET SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 2019 AWARD, was for: “LAS MIL VIDAS”, by Marina Seresesky (Meridional Producciones, Spain).   

Finally, “En la línea azul” by Luis García Rebollo was awarded with a Special Mention to the Canary literary work with the utmost possibilities of being adapted to cinema and/or television and for its impact on the market. A historical novel around an unprecedented journey through science, history, intrigue and the sea.

CIIF Market 2020

CIIF Market is already working on its XVII edition, with the aim of becoming the key international event for the development of works and new talents within the cinematographic and audiovisual panorama.
