CIIF MARKET 2021 ANNOUNCES SELECTED AUDIOVISUAL PROJECTS

  • Eight projects under development in Spain and four in Latin America (Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay) have been selected in search of financing. In addition, four Canarian projects will be presented in the Focus Canarias section.
  • Among the participating projects are nine fiction feature films, four documentaries (one of them animated) and three television series.
  • Three literary works in the national section and two in Focus Canarias will be evaluated for their possible adaptation to different screens.
  • The projects and literary works of CIIF Market 2021 will compete for various prizes to promote their projection and international momentum.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council this morning hosted the presentation of the 17th edition of the Canary Islands International Film Market , which will be held in a hybrid format from April 28 to 30 in the capital of Tenerife.

At the event, where the film and audiovisual projects that will participate in CIIF Market 2021 , as well as the selected literary works , have appeared Laureano Pérez Rodríguez, CEO of PROEXCA and general director of Economic Promotion of the Government of the Canary Islands; Enrique Arriaga, Vice President and Minister of Culture of the Council of Tenerife; José Manuel Bermúdez Esparza , mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife; Ricardo Martínez , director of the Tenerife Film Commission ; and Guillermo Ríos , director of CIIF Market .

The official headquarters of the CIIF Market will once again be the Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey Hotel (online or in person depending on the restrictions due to the advance of the pandemic), where the professional meetings of producers, distributors, television channels, sales agents, as well as other industry professionals, for the promotion of audiovisual creation and promotion of the co-production of projects in development for the European and international markets. As well as promoting synergies between the film and publishing sectors by including the participation of Spanish literary works with the possibility of being adapted to different screens.

The press conference was opened by José Manuel Bermúdez Esparza , who expressed his satisfaction with the celebration in the capital of Tenerife of a new edition of the Canary Islands International Film Market. “Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been a city devoted to the world of film production for a decade. This municipal government is aware of the need to promote the audiovisual industry, which generates employment and wealth in the municipality, as well as being an undoubted source of promotion beyond our insular geography”, he pointed out.

The mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has remarked that “CIIF Market, like the industry itself, has been able to adapt to the new circumstances imposed by the health crisis we are experiencing, and demonstrates its maturity by going back to its appointment, despite the difficulties , which is a reason for congratulations to those who are responsible for its organization” and has indicated that “the audiovisual industry is a generator of opportunities in the city, and so is this professional meeting whose development we celebrate as a strategic commitment to continue consolidating this matter ”.

Next, Laureano Pérez Rodríguez wanted to congratulate CIIF Market for “being a reference event in the audiovisual ecosystem of the Canary Islands, as well as thanking its mission and vision of promoting the production of international projects, which in turn promotes audiovisual creation in Canary Islands”. “From PROEXCA we firmly believe in this event and we have supported it in its different editions by attracting renowned international producers, to make them aware of the advantages of shooting in the Canary Islands and our local industry. According to the most recent data, the volume of investment in the audiovisual industry on the islands reached 50 million euros, and in relation to film and television productions, direct employment of 2,500 contracts was generated. These positive figures highlight the importance of the sector”.

For his part, Enrique Arriaga , has highlighted the importance of the audiovisual industry for Tenerife as a strategic economic sector, an industry that is a true driving force for business and labor activity. “In the last 20 years, it has generated more than 140 million in income thanks to the 1,647 productions attended in Tenerife. That is why work meetings such as CIIF Market are essential for the sector and for the island by connecting the different industrial agents and giving them the opportunity to learn about the enormous possibilities that Tenerife can offer as a recording set”, he concluded.

Ricardo Martinez has pointed out that “the Cabildo de Tenerife, through the Tenerife Film Commission, supports with its sponsorship the development of this market in its commitment to promote the local industry and all those projects that, in reference to audiovisual production, generate movement in the sector. For more than 20 years, we have informed and promoted the advantages of filming on the island thanks to the tax incentives, the great professionals and the variety of landscapes and settings that the island offers”.

For Guillermo Ríos , “coordination with the different institutions and organizations that sponsor and collaborate in the market is essential, for which we want to thank their invaluable support.” And he highlighted in his speech that “despite the difficulties due to the current situation of the global health crisis, it is a pleasure to be able to hold a new edition of the Canary Islands International Film Market, a highly anticipated event on the cultural scene of the Canary Islands and especially in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which will turn the city into a meeting point and business engine to promote film and audiovisual co-production”. “This appointment has had to be adapted to the new circumstances, offering this year a hybrid format with face-to-face and virtual activities, and carrying out all the safety, hygiene and protection protocols imposed by government authorities and derived from the pandemic”, has affected.

The director of CIIF Market also wanted to point out that “Canary Islands International Film Market was born 18 years ago with the aim of promoting audiovisual creation and strengthening networking between the different agents in the industry, adding today the consolidation of synergies with the sector editorial and including literary works with the possibility of being adapted to different screens.

“When a production is filmed, it not only helps to create a quality business fabric, but also contributes to the economy of a territory and influences the culture, tourism and service sectors. Without a doubt, this is the purpose of our market, to contribute to creating this industrial fabric, generating new opportunities, work meetings and a fruitful development for the completion of the selected projects”, he concluded.

FILM AND AUDIOVISUAL PROJECTS OF THE XVII EDITION OF CIIF MARKET

CIIF Market has selected the following national and international film and audiovisual projects in search of financing, among which are a wide variety of productions (nine fiction feature films, four documentaries, one of them animated, and three television series or miniseries) and genres (drama, comedy, thriller, horror), with seven female directors.

The main selection criteria have been the quality of the projects, their diversity, the financing plan, the evolution of the script, their international vocation and the talent of the directors or producers, for which reason an attempt has been made to find a balance between projects that may be more commercial and others with greater creative risk.

SELECTED LITERARY WORKS AT CIIF MARKET 2021

Canary Islands International Film Market has selected the following Spanish literary compositions, of various genres and aimed at different audiences. Its authors, together with publishers and literary agents, will present their works on the market for their possible adaptation to the screens.
For their selection, the quality of the works, the talent of the authors and their potential to be adapted to film, television or digital platforms have also been taken into account.

CIIF MARKET AWARDS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL PROMOTION OF FILM AND AUDIOVISUAL PRODUCTION

In addition to the usual prizes awarded by CIIF Market, this year several more awards have been added, the result of new collaboration agreements carried out with different entities, to which the cinematographic and audiovisual projects participating in the market opt to promote their international projection and push abroad.

CIIF Market Santa Cruz de Tenerife Award for the project with the greatest international projection, with an amount of 1,200 euros to attend an international market of your choice.

Canary Islands Film Award for the best Canarian project, which will reward the winners with a travel grant to attend a sectoral market with international projection.

Filmarket Hub Award , consisting of the exclusive one-year registration to the official catalog of the Filmarket Hub online market, where access will be facilitated and the project will be recommended to the most important companies in the audiovisual sector and financing funds.

Macaronesia Films Award for the project with international potential, which will receive financial and legal advisory services (project finance) regarding tax incentives in the Canary Islands.

Music Library & SFX Award : The winning project will have a flat rate limited to a free production, which will allow the synchronization of production music from the Music Library & SFX catalogs in the project content, through its music supervision division 360º Chord. Once the music used is licensed, it is covered by the main rights for multiplatform broadcasting worldwide and for the life of the content.

MAFIZ Award (Málaga Festival Industry Zone) , two projects will be awarded with free accreditation to attend all the activities of the next edition of the industry area of the Malaga Festival.

This year, for the first time, the following prizes will be awarded to the literary work or works with the greatest potential and feasibility of adaptation to film, television or digital platforms.

Music Library & SFX Award for Literary Work: You will get a flat rate, in case it is taken to the different screens, limited to a free production, which will allow the synchronization of the production music from the Music Library & SFX catalogs in the project content, through his musical supervision division 360º Acorde.

Adapta Market Award : The chosen book will obtain free registration for one year on the new online platform Adapta Market, an initiative recently created by Nautilus Gestió Cultural i Comunicació, with the collaboration of the Valencian Institute of Culture and the Association of Publishers of the Valencian Country ( AEPV). Through Adapta Market, the winning author, publisher and/or literary agents will be able to contact various producers, screenwriters, etc., interested in finding new stories through literature and promoting these networking meetings to generate professional synergies.
